Creative Sewing Retreat

Find out about this weekend sewing retreat here

I will be returning to the New Place Hotel (Nr Wickham, Hampshire) in September to teach a 3-day Stitchbooking workshop. Details below.

Create a Fabric Scrapbook with Kim Edith
Create a Stitchbook using your own photos to celebrate your family, record a memorable holiday or tell a personal story. Stitchbooking is a fusion between scrapbooking and textile art and features blank fabric books that can be decorated using a wide variety of textile techniques.  Learn how to transfer your photos onto fabric, create interesting page backgrounds and create text to explain your story. A great way to use fabric scraps and some of the buttons, ribbons and embellishments that you’ve been hoarding!   NB: You’ll need to buy a blank Stitchbook (or make one from Kim Edith’s Ravelin sewing pattern before you arrive) and bring any fabric scraps you want to use, but all other materials will be included.

Find out more.

Portsmouth History Zines

Portsmouth History Zines

Create a narrative booklet about a story from Portsmouth's past.

In the workshop you will explore three stories from Portsmouth's history and chose one to develop into a story.

You will then make a mini zine (an A6 booklet) to explain this story, using drawing, writing or a mixture of both. Learn how to highlight key information, structure your narrative and add drawn or collaged elements.

You will be provided with pictures of the events or people mentioned in your story, so you can add these to illustrate the text. Alternatively, develop your drawing skills by sketching some of the details.

I will provide the paper for the zine, as well a selection of materials to help you create and present the content(such as felt pens, pencil crayons and washi tape). However if you have a particular type of pen/pencil you like to write with or specific art materials you like to use, then bring those along.

Please note: You might not finish your zine in the time, but you will be able to take home any relevant pictures or paper materials needed to finish.

No artistic talent needed! All abilities welcome. Age 16+

The course runs from 1-4pm.

It will be held at my Hotwalls studio which is on the seafront in Old Portsmouth.

I will provide tea and coffee.

There are several parking options such as the Land Rover BAR car park and some on street parking.

Surface Design for Fabric Collage
Sept

Surface Design for Fabric Collage

This is a skills building workshop focusing on techniques you can use to decorate fabric to use in fabric collage.

We will be exploring a range of textile surface design techniques using paints, dyes, inks and vinyls. These are all techniques that I use to create interesting backgrounds and fabric pieces for Applique, and produce unpredictable and exciting results.

During the workshop you will be given a small blank fabric Stitchbook and then will create a number of samples to add to the book to create a reference library of techniques you can use in future projects.

Techniques covered:

Brusho Dyes

Inktense Pencils

Gel plate printing

Using vinyl shapes

You will have time during the day to try out the new techniques and add the samples to your Stitchbook.

This is not a masterclass into one method or skill but an overview of a range of possible techniques. Hopefully by the end of the day you will be excited by the processes and results and be ready to start your own exploration into fabric surface design.

(Please note- this workshop is designed for fabric art projects and the finished samples will not be washable).

The course runs from 10 – 3.30pm  and will have a half hour break for lunch. Due to the small size of my studio there will be a maximum of 3 participants. Suitable for age 16+

It will be held at my Hotwalls studio  which is a lovely place to spend the day. There will be a break for lunch and you can bring your own or visit the fantastic onsite Canteen. I will also be providing tea and coffee throughout the day.

Introduction To Stitchbooking Workshop

This is an Introduction to Stitchbooking workshop that aims to give you all of the tools and advice you need to make your own Stitchbook – a textile memory book featuring your photos printed onto fabric.

The course includes a blank fabric book and photo transfer paper, as well as instruction booklet and planning sheets.

During the workshop I will guide you through the main skills needed to produce your Stitchbook including printing your photos onto fabric, adding text and constructing the pages.

You will have time during the day to try out all of the techniques and make a start on the pages for your own book. Hopefully by the end of the day you will have the confidence and understanding of how to complete the rest of your Stitchbook.

The course runs from 10 – 3.30pm  and will have a half hour break for lunch.  Suitable for beginners and any level of creative experience. This is a small group (max 4 participants) so there is plenty of time to learn new skills and I try and alter the content to suit the needs and experience of the group. Suitable for age 14+.

It will be held at my Hotwalls studio  which is a lovely place to spend the day (more info on my Studio).  There will be a break for lunch and you can bring your own or visit the fantastic onsite Canteen. I will also be providing tea and coffee throughout the day.

There are several parking options such as the Land Rover BAR car park and some on street parking.

Terms and Conditions:

Payment must be paid upon booking.

Cancellations may be made up to and including the day of participation for a full refund or change onto another course if available. However I would prefer if you could give two weeks notice so I can try to fill the space.

Workshops will only be held with sufficient participants and I may have to cancel certain sessions if the numbers are not made. If this happens you will be offered an alternative date or have your booking fee completely refunded. I will try and give you two weeks notice of any cancellations although this cannot be guaranteed due to unforseen circumstances such as Covid-19.

Gift Certificates are available and may be exchanged for their value against other workshops, or exchanged for equivalent price products from my Etsy or Stitchbook Studio shops.

Surface Design for Fabric Collage
